For two years, State Trooper Kayne Dobrescu has wanted only one thing to understand why his wife inexplicably killed their children and then herself. Memories haunt his days and lay siege to his nights, leaving him questioning his reasons for living.
Jessica Hallstatt became a widow and single mother the night her firefighter husband died in a fiery explosion at an accident scene. While her husband may have died a hero, he left Jessica with deep emotional scars that haven't begun to heal.
When Kayne accepted a transfer to the mountain town of Payson, Arizona, he never expected to meet anyone like Jessica. From the moment he pulled her over for speeding, he was drawn in by her whiskey-colored eyes and sassy dimple. He knows she and her children are a forever type package, and he's vowed never to give anyone the power to destroy him again. Yet fate has other ideas, throwing Kayne and Jessica together in a fight against an unknown enemy to save the life of a child—and hopefully one another.

Actually giving this 2-1/2 stars. I enjoyed the beginning of this book (except for the Cody character who was so over the top ridiculous it was unbelievable) ...UNTIL the judge had them get married. The whole tone of the book changed several times, from the dark beginning to the more lighthearted middle after the marriage to the dark dark end. The Tasha/Gracie storyline was so contrived, it was borderline dumb. Based on the beginning of the story, it was kind of obvious that Tasha was going to be found alive at some point, but yikes. And then the ending. Holy cow what a mishmash of plots and characters. I honestly couldn't keep the bad guys straight there were so many of them. It was too much at one time I honestly didn't care after a while. And the kids figured how to track the GPS in the stuffed animal before the "alphabet soup" guys?????????Just a few generic issues I had. Glaringly was "forty" being misspelled starting with chapter "fourty". Wow. Also was all the internal dialog. Entirely too many paragraphs started with whatever Kayne was thinking in italics, usually with the F word thrown in there for added effect. Got really old. Could've been a much better book but it was okay.

Razing Kayne Walking A Thin Blue Line Book 1 edition by Julieanne Reeves Romance eBooks Reviews
4-4.5 stars
This was a really good story. Jess and Kayne were both really good characters and I liked them both. The story was very good and had enough going on that it kept me engaged through the end. I liked that the story took place in Arizona as I live there and don't see a lot of stories set in AZ. This is the first book I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I plan to try the next book in the series when it comes out.
Jess is a good woman that hasn't had a good life. She was raised thinking that she wasn't good enough and that just got worse when she married a man that she thought cherished her but it ended up being a lie. Her husband (Jarred) cheated on her and made her think she wasn't good enough for him right up until he demanded a divorce...the same day he ended up dying in the line of duty. Since then, Jess' main focus is raising her kids (4 kids, all of which she adopted) and she never intends to open herself up to another man for fear of another heartbreak.
Kayne is a good man that works for the Arizona state patrol. He didn't have a good life growing up and because a cop became he wanted to help people. He married for the wrong reasons and wasn't happy in his marriage but loved his kids a lot. He came home from work to find his older 2 kids dead and the baby missing and before he knows what happened his wife shot herself in front of him. Of course, Kayne was the primary suspect but the cops couldn't find any evidence against him. They also never found any leads or the baby's body.
When the story begins it's 2 years after both Jess and Kayne's spouses have died. Kayne was recently transferred to the town Jess lives in and is settling in but he's not a happy camper. Kayne still has problems with losing his kids and his wife's suicide and he has trouble moving on and considers killing himself. Things change for him when he happens to pull Jess over for a speeding violation. Jess is the first thing that has brought he out of his funk and he can't seem to stop thinking about her. He knows he can't pursue anything with her because he doesn't know how long he'll be around but that doesn't stop him from wanting to see her. During the traffic stop, Kayne forgets to give Jess back her license and registration so he stops by her place to drop it off. Kayne ends up visiting for a bit but it's hard for him because seeing her kids makes him realize just how much he misses his kids and makes all the memories he tried to suppress come back up. This is painful for him so he leaves quickly but finds that he can't stay away and they run in to each other a number of times. Regardless of his intent to stay away from Jess and her kids, Kayne can't do it and soon he and Jess are actually making plans to spend time together.
As they spend time together, an unexpected revelation comes to light (although it's easy to see it coming as you read) that causes some understandable but unnecessary problems between Kayne and Jess. I was expecting this to happen but was very surprised by the next plot twist which put the story on a path I wasn't expecting. Kayne and Jess end up in an arrangement that brings them together but they still have some things to work out between them to make sure they're good for the long run. Most of the people in town like the two of them together but Jarred's best friend, Cody, is intent on making trouble from the beginning. Cody has some messed up idea that he and Jess belong together and goes about trying to push between Kayne and Jess any way he can. Fortunately he doesn't get too far but he still is a PITA. Also there's some other issues that pop up, strange things going on that make them realize that some unexpected threat may be stalking them. I liked seeing Jess and Kayne comes together as a couple. I also really liked reading about Kayne with the kids...his character is a wonderful dad. Kayne and Jess do have some hurdles to get past, both emotional and metaphorical ones, but they come through things well and get a satisfying HEA.
I really enjoyed this story. Jess and Kayne were both likeable and believable characters and I couldn't help but root for them from the beginning. The story was very good and even though there wasn't a lot of action, there was enough suspense to keep me interested through the end. The romance was good as well with both touching moments and drama to keep the reader on their toes. I'm looking forward to trying the next book in the series when it comes out. I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up. D
Officer Kayne Dobrescu has endured an unspeakable tragedy. A tragedy no one should have to face; the loss of his wife and children. His journey to find a reason to live after this paralyzing loss leads him to a job in Payson, Arizona where, in a routine traffic stop, he meets Jessica Halstatt. She's fascinating. But a car full of kids makes him wary of pursuing any type of involvement with this woman.
Jess is dealing with her own tragedy; the loss of her husband in a fiery explosion two years earlier. Jarrod Halstatt dies a hero, saving the life of an infant girl in the process. But Jarrod had secrets;secrets that left Jess with a broken heart and doubts about herself, leaving no room for involvement with another man, especially not a gorgeous man like Officer Dobrescu who could have his pick of women.
But, circumstances conspire to throw these two lonely, hurting people together. Circumstances that lead to some of the sweetest, most intimate love scenes I have ever read. The heart, mind, soul and body of these two lovers is laid bare by this brilliant new author. Breathtaking.
But, both Kayne and Jess have unknown events in their pasts. A betrayal by a trusted friend and a decades long blood feud leading up to a mind chilling, heart stopping finale that left me gasping, as the forces that have sought to erase Kayne's very existence collide.
Ms. Reeves is writing a series using her knowledge of 911 dispatching and long standing acquaintance with law enforcement personell. I am already looking forward to her next book as her captivating cast of characters continue Walking The Thin Blue Line.
