This is my favorite Nesbit. It's tart and sly and loaded with witty and slightly ironic throwaway lines and passing observations. The story is crisply and clearly told but there's always an amused and just almost there tongue in cheek undercurrent that adds a bit of kid friendly edginess.Product details

The Enchanted Castle E Nesbit 9781449985578 Books Reviews
A wonderful tale for children of all ages (no need for me to say how old a child I am) . I kept thinking I knew where the story was going and I kept on being surprised. Like Harry Potter? This is definitely worth checking out.
One of my all-time favorites since childhood, marvelous book & wonderful, funny writing. J.K. Rowling owes a debt to E. Nesbit...she blazed the trail for stories of ordinary kids caught up in magical adventures!
Don't purchase this reprint from Wilder Publications. The punctuation and type-setting is a complete mess. Many punctuation marks are missing, while others are in the wrong place. Some paragraphs don't start where they should, others start where they shouldn't. It would be very frustrating for a child to try to read this reprint, so even at this price, it's not worth it. I'm going to purchase another edition for my girls and recycle this one.
this book is printed off the internet. No chapter headings, no illustrations and the font size is small and hard to read. Worse is the bad punctuation. Ugh. Not the Puffin classic version which i thought I was buying. Now am forced to re-order the book....
Happiness is... a favorite book, a reader who loves the book and the characters!
This is the most famous and perhaps best of E. Nesbit's tales of magic and its potential for getting its users into unexpected, hilarious or frightening or both, situations, and the reader brings the tale to brilliantly to life. Her rendition of the "Ugly-Wuglies," dummies the children make from pillows and umbrellas and other props and inadvertently bring to life, had me laughing out loud and pounding the chair arm with mirth. - yet the reader is never obtrusive and never reads with the exaggerated emphasis so common in readings of children's books.
Nesbit with her intricate realizations of magic gone wrong provided one of the wellsprings of modern fantasy writing, from the wistful imitations of Edward Eager (whose stories can also be found in audio versions)to Poul Anderson's "Operation" series collected as Operation Chaos, to Harry Potter. A wonderful gift for Nesbit enthusiasts, and perhaps an even better gift for those who know only the often pale and muddled recent derivatives.
Critics say this is her most perfect creation, and I agree. What a fine movie this would make! Childhood adventure encounters danger and even horror, and there is also romance. Plus, an inside view into life in England for those of social standing but without means. The French governess seems to be transparently Nesbit herself, who spent he developing years in France under similar circumstances.
A story of magic and enchantment with perhaps, a cautionary moral ingredient, 'what you want you sometimes get'.
The heroes, if you can call them that, are three children Gerald, James and Kathleen,( Jerry, Jimmy and Cathy ) and one day, during their make believe games, they stumble across a hidden castle complete with sleeping princess. Only she isn't. She's the housekeepers daughter pretending. After the obligatory kiss to return her to the real world , Mabel, for that is her name, enchants the children with stories of hidden worlds and special magic, chief amongst which is a ring which she claims will make her invisible. Mabel intends the ring to be part of a 'make believe' game so when it really does make her invisible she is horrified. And so begins a tale of bewitching proportions, where each child in turn experiences the effects of the magic ring and stone statues come alive in the moonlight. In true Nesbit fashion, the magic tends to work against the wisher and takes some time to resolve but it's all good fun of the home in time for tea variety. Naturally enough everything falls into place by the final chapter, although this is one of those novels which leaves the reader wondering ' did it really happen or did it not'.
Not perhaps Edith Nesbit's best effort, although maybe that depends upon your point of view, it is a long book for it's purpose and at times it is difficult to keep track. Rather reminiscent of Masefield, with convoluted twists and turns. Never the less this is a good book to read to children, perhaps a little each night over a period of time they'll love it.
Good fun,
